Intabio
Analytical platform for biotherapeutic drug quality characterization
About Intabio
Intabio, founded in 2015 by Lena Wu and Erik Gentalen, developed an analytical platform to accelerate the development of biotherapeutic drugs. The company was established to address critical bottlenecks in protein analytics within the biopharmaceutical industry. In 2016, inventor and scientist Erik Gentalen reached out to his former colleague from Caliper Technologies, Lena Wu, who later joined as CEO. Wu holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology from Stanford University School of Medicine.

The company's main offering was the Blaze™ System, a bench-top instrument that integrates imaged capillary isoelectric focusing (iCIEF) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) to provide rapid, direct characterization of intact protein isoforms. This system, consisting of the instrument, a microfluidic chip, and a reagent kit, was designed to identify and quantify subtle protein modifications that can impact the efficacy and stability of biotherapeutic drugs like monoclonal antibodies. The technology aimed to reduce analysis time from weeks to approximately 15 minutes, offering significant efficiency gains for biopharma companies in areas like cell line development and bioprocess optimization. The Blaze System was made commercially available in North America in late 2020.
Intabio operated on a business model centered on selling this specialized instrumentation to biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing labs. The company raised a total of $30.7 million over four funding rounds, including a $2 million seed round in 2017, a $9.5 million Series A in 2018, and an $18 million Series B in 2020, with lead investor Northpond Ventures. In January 2021, Intabio was acquired by SCIEX, a global leader in life science analytical technologies, for an undisclosed amount. Following the acquisition, Intabio's team and products were integrated into SCIEX, continuing operations from their Fremont, California facility. SCIEX has since continued to develop the technology, launching the Intabio ZT system in 2023, which fully integrates the icIEF platform with MS for advanced charge variant analysis.
