About Insight Engines

Insight Engines was established in 2015 by Chief Executive Officer Grant Wernick and Chief Technology Officer Jacob Perkins. The founders brought a background in consumer-side natural language processing and search, having previously run a company from 2011 to 2015 that translated human language into complex database queries, aiming to provide a higher fidelity experience than mainstream voice assistants. They founded Insight Engines to apply these concepts to the enterprise space, specifically to unlock the value of machine data by making it more accessible.

The company developed a platform that allows users to query machine data using plain English, which the system then translates into optimized, complex queries in real-time. This approach was designed to eliminate the steep learning curve associated with proprietary query languages, such as Splunk's Search Processing Language (SPL), thereby broadening the pool of employees who can interact with and extract insights from machine data. The primary application of this technology was initially focused on cybersecurity, with their first product being the Insight Engines Cyber Security Investigator for Splunk, which gained rapid traction among Fortune 500 companies and major government organizations. This tool empowers security analysts, from novices to experts, to more quickly investigate threats by asking direct questions about network traffic or authentication data.

The business model centered on selling its software to large enterprises and government entities that were already making significant investments in platforms like Splunk but struggled with the specialized skills required to leverage them fully. By integrating with Splunk, Insight Engines enhanced the value of the customer's existing infrastructure. In July 2017, the company secured $15.8 million in a Series A funding round led by August Capital, with notable participation from Splunk itself, which underscored the strategic alignment between the two firms. The funding was earmarked for accelerating the product roadmap beyond security into areas like IT operations and business analytics, and for expanding its sales and marketing efforts.

A significant milestone in the company's journey occurred in July 2025, when Insight Engine was acquired by HData, a provider of regulatory data solutions. At the time of the acquisition, the software platform was owned and operated by Advanced Energy United. The transaction aimed to create a premier regulatory intelligence platform for the energy sector by integrating Insight Engine's capabilities with HData's existing library of regulatory filings. Following the acquisition, the Insight Engine platform was enhanced with generative AI to summarize complex regulatory documents, while continuing to provide expert-reviewed analysis, particularly for natural gas and electric rate cases.
