Innotech Solar
Delivers high quality solar modules that maximize electricity production by optimizing various types of solar cells
About Innotech Solar
Innotech Solar (ITS), a Norwegian company founded in 2008 by former executives of REC Solar, specialized in the solar energy sector. The company's business model centered on optimizing and repurposing rejected solar cells from various manufacturers, a strategy considered viable when silicon prices were high. ITS developed proprietary industrial processes, including laser-based techniques, to test, sort, and enhance the performance of these cells, aiming to maximize electricity production and reduce waste. The company would isolate cell impurities and remove non-functioning parts with lasers, allowing the remaining sections to operate at full capacity. These optimized cells were then used to manufacture their own photovoltaic (PV) modules.
The company's product lines included modules like the "EcoPlus" and specialized off-grid modules, which were marketed as combining environmental friendliness, durability, and a competitive price-performance ratio. Key features promoted were European production, higher efficiency through anti-reflective glass, and the elimination of "hot spot" risks, which are areas of high temperature that can degrade a panel. Innotech Solar expanded its operations with production facilities in Norway, Sweden, and Germany, and established sales offices in several countries, including China and the United States. Notable milestones included acquiring a module plant from REC in Sweden in 2011 and taking over the insolvent German PV distributor Energiebau in early 2015 to strengthen its market position.
Despite its initial growth and expansion, Innotech Solar faced significant market challenges. As the price of new solar cells, particularly from Asian competitors, dropped, the company's business model of repurposing rejected cells became less economically viable. Reports from 2015 indicated that the company's repurposed products were becoming more expensive than modules from established brands. In March 2015, its Swedish subsidiary, Swemodule AB, filed for bankruptcy, having ceased production in December 2014. This insolvency highlighted the severe financial pressures on the parent company, which struggled to compete on scale and purchasing power, leading to an unsustainable operational structure.
