About Infobright

Infobright was a software company that developed a column-oriented relational database designed for high-performance analytics on large volumes of machine-generated data. Founded in 2005 by Polish mathematicians Cas Apanowicz, Dominik Ślęzak, Piotr Synak, and Jakub Wróblewski, the company originated from technology developed within the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). It was venture-funded by investors including Flybridge Capital Partners and Information Venture Partners.

The company's core technology centered on a columnar database architecture integrated with MySQL and later PostgreSQL, which featured high data compression ratios, often around 20:1. A key differentiator was its proprietary Knowledge Grid, a metadata layer that stored information about the data itself, enabling fast query execution without the need for traditional database indexes, partitioning, or extensive manual tuning. This architecture was particularly effective for ad hoc queries in data warehousing, business intelligence, and log analytics, serving clients in telecommunications, financial services, and advertising with customers such as Yahoo!, JDSU, and SonicWall.

Infobright initially offered both an open-source community edition and a commercial enterprise version. In 2016, the company shifted its focus exclusively to its OEM and direct customer markets. In March 2017, Ignite Technologies, part of the ESW Capital group, acquired all assets and customers of Infobright, rebranding the product as Infobright DB. The original Infobright entity was later acquired by Security On-Demand Inc. in 2017 and subsequently spun out in 2019 to become AQ Technologies, a Polish R&D organization focused on using AI for cybersecurity data analysis, with many of the original founders involved.
