About Inflazome

Inflazome was a biotechnology company that focused on developing orally available drugs to address clinical unmet needs in inflammatory diseases by targeting inflammasomes. The company was established in 2016 by Professor Matt Cooper from The University of Queensland and Professor Luke O'Neill from Trinity College Dublin. Both founders are recognized leaders in the fields of inflammation and biochemistry, with their extensive research forming the scientific basis of the company. Their work centered on the NLRP3 inflammasome, a key driver of inflammation in numerous chronic conditions.

The company's core business was the discovery and development of small molecule inhibitors of the NLRP3 inflammasome. These inhibitors were designed to be taken orally, offering a significant advantage over injectable biologic treatments for a wide array of inflammatory diseases, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and cardiovascular conditions. Inflazome's product candidates aimed to block the inflammatory process at its source by inhibiting the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, thereby preventing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18. The business model was typical of a drug development firm, focusing on progressing its candidates through preclinical and clinical trials to demonstrate safety and efficacy, with the ultimate goal of commercialization or strategic partnership.

A significant milestone for Inflazome was its acquisition by the Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche in September 2020. The deal involved an upfront payment of €380 million (approximately $451 million at the time), with the potential for additional milestone-based payments. This acquisition provided Roche with full rights to Inflazome's portfolio of NLRP3 inhibitors, which had shown promise in clinical trials for treating conditions such as the cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) and hidradenitis suppurativa. At the time of the acquisition, Inflazome had successfully advanced its lead drug candidates through Phase I clinical trials, establishing their safety and bioavailability.
