Indix Corporation operated a cloud-based product intelligence platform, meticulously gathering and structuring information on over a billion products. The company was founded in 2010 by Sanjay Parthasarathy, a former Microsoft executive, along with co-founders Satya Kaliki, Rajesh Muppalla, and Sridhar Venkatesh. Parthasarathy, after a 19-year tenure at Microsoft where he notably led the Developer & Platform Evangelism Division, envisioned a company that would tackle key challenges in the evolving world of commerce. This vision led to the establishment of Indix, which was headquartered in Seattle, Washington, with a significant product development office in Chennai, India.
The company's core business centered on providing data-as-a-service. It employed proprietary algorithms to crawl and process vast amounts of publicly available product data, which it then structured and made accessible to clients. The platform offered insights into pricing, assortment, competition, and other product attributes, serving medium to large-sized brands, retailers, and technology firms. The business model was primarily SaaS-based, offering access to its extensive product database and analytics through customized applications and a RESTful API. This API enabled developers to build product-aware applications, embedding real-time product information directly into their software.
The founders brought a wealth of experience to the venture. Parthasarathy held master's degrees from MIT and a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from Anna University. Satya Kaliki, who had co-founded ZANEC and worked at iSOFT, NetScaler, and Cisco, had a background in data science and cloud computing. Rajesh Muppalla, a computer science gold medallist from Pune University, had experience at Thoughtworks and led Indix's data platform team. This collective expertise was instrumental in building a platform that aimed to be a comprehensive repository for the world's product information.
Indix secured significant funding throughout its operation, raising over $30 million from investors including Nexus Venture Partners, Avalon Ventures, and Nokia Growth Partners. The company's journey culminated in February 2019 when it was acquired by Avalara, a leading provider of tax compliance automation software. Avalara sought to integrate Indix's AI technology and extensive product database to enhance its own services, specifically to automate the maintenance and expansion of its tax content database, which includes international product codes, taxability rules, and classifications. Following the acquisition, the Indix company was no longer active, and a majority of its team joined Avalara to continue leveraging the technology they had built.
