About Indigo Systems
Indigo Systems Corporation was a specialized developer and manufacturer of advanced infrared (IR) cameras, components, and related software. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Goleta, California, the company engineered a range of high-performance IR products covering near, midwave, and longwave spectrums. Its offerings included cooled and uncooled infrared detectors, camera cores, and fully integrated camera systems designed for diverse markets such as commercial, industrial, security, military, and research and development.
The company was recognized for its proprietary on-focal-plane signal processing technology and the development of compact, high-performance cameras like the Omega, which featured vanadium oxide microbolometer detectors. Its product lines, such as the Merlin and Phoenix cameras, offered various focal plane arrays (FPAs) like InGaAs and InSb to meet specific application needs, from predictive maintenance to scientific research.
In October 2003, FLIR Systems announced its agreement to acquire Indigo Systems for approximately $190 million, a transaction that was finalized in January 2004. The acquisition integrated Indigo's expertise in IR detectors and camera cores into FLIR's portfolio, enhancing its capabilities in the thermal imaging market. Following the acquisition, the founders of Indigo Systems, William J. Parrish and E. Timothy Fitzgibbons, were involved in litigation with FLIR, which was settled in 2011. FLIR Systems was later acquired by Teledyne Technologies in 2021 and now operates as Teledyne FLIR.
