About INDIGO Paints

Indigo Paints Ltd. operates as the fifth-largest company in the Indian decorative paint industry based on revenue. Founded in 2000 by Hemant Jalan, the company began with a modest capital of Rs 1 lakh, initially manufacturing lower-end cement paints. Jalan, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur and Stanford University with an MBA from Chicago Booth, brought prior entrepreneurial and corporate experience from heading Vedanta Ltd.'s copper business to his new venture. After facing bankruptcy with a previous chemical business, he re-entered entrepreneurship at the age of 43, demonstrating considerable resilience.

The company's business model centers on the manufacturing, selling, and distribution of a wide array of decorative paints and allied products. This includes emulsions, enamels, wood coatings, primers, putties, and distempers. Indigo Paints serves the B2C market through an extensive distribution network that, as of FY24, comprised 53 depots and 18,105 active dealers across India, supported by 9,842 tinting machines. A key element of its market strategy was to initially target Tier 3, Tier 4 cities, and rural areas to establish brand presence before expanding into more competitive Tier 1 and Tier 2 urban centers. Revenue is generated directly from the sale of these products through its dealer network, with a recent expansion into e-commerce partnerships.

A cornerstone of Indigo's strategy is its focus on product differentiation. The company was the first in India to introduce several category-creating products, such as Metallic Emulsions, Tile Coat Emulsions, Floor Coat Emulsions, and Bright Ceiling Coat Emulsions. These differentiated products, which command higher margins, accounted for approximately 28-30% of revenue and have been instrumental in securing entry into retail outlets and enabling cross-selling of its broader portfolio. This approach has allowed the company to maintain higher gross margins compared to many industry peers. To support its operations and growth, Indigo Paints operates five manufacturing facilities across Jodhpur, Kochi, and Pudukkottai.

Significant milestones mark the company's journey, including receiving its first investment from Sequoia Capital in 2014, followed by another in 2016. A major rebranding effort occurred in 2013, and in 2018, the company intensified its marketing by appointing cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador. This culminated in a successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) in January 2021, which was oversubscribed 117 times, raising approximately ₹1,170 crore. The proceeds were allocated for capacity expansion, purchase of tinting machines, and debt repayment. In 2023, Indigo Paints expanded its portfolio by acquiring a 51% stake in Apple Chemie, entering the waterproofing and construction chemicals market.
