Impermium
Protecting Internet sites against account hijacking and malicious user behavior & content
About Impermium
Impermium was a cybersecurity firm specializing in online content protection, founded in 2010 by Mark Risher, Vishwanath Ramarao, and Naveen Jamal. The founding team first collaborated while managing the anti-spam and security systems for Yahoo! Mail, an experience that directly informed their venture. Risher, who served as CEO, was previously Yahoo's "Spam Czar," and Ramarao also held a senior role at Yahoo. Recognizing that social spam was a growing threat better addressed by an independent entity, they established Impermium to offer a cross-platform solution.
The company developed a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform to protect websites from a range of online threats, including fraudulent user registrations, account takeovers, malicious user-generated content, and social spam. Its technology utilized patented statistical analysis, machine learning models, and threat intelligence gathered from over 1.5 million websites to provide real-time protection. The business model focused on providing these security services to high-traffic internet properties. Its client roster grew to include over 300,000 sites, featuring prominent names like Tumblr, Pinterest, CNN, ESPN, and The Washington Post, as well as commenting platforms such as Disqus and Livefyre.
Impermium secured significant financial backing, raising an initial $1 million seed round in 2011 and a subsequent $8 million Series A round led by Highland Capital Partners. Total investment reached $9 million from venture capital firms including Accel Partners, Charles River Ventures, and AOL Ventures. In January 2014, Google acquired Impermium for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition was viewed as an acqui-hire, bringing Impermium's team of security experts into Google's own anti-abuse division to enhance the internet giant's capabilities in fighting spam and online fraud. Following the acquisition, Impermium's services were discontinued as its team and technology were integrated into Google.
