About ImmunoCellular Therapeutics

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, Ltd. operated as a clinical-stage biotechnology firm with a clear focus on developing immune-based therapies to combat cancer. The company was founded in 2006 by the internationally recognized neurosurgeon Dr. John S. Yu, who also served as its Chief Scientific Officer and Chairman. Dr. Yu, a Harvard Medical School and Stanford University alumnus, leveraged his extensive research in immune and gene therapy for brain tumors to guide the company's scientific direction. The company went public and was listed on the NYSE American under the ticker IMUC.

The company's core business revolved around its proprietary dendritic cell (DC) vaccine platform. This technology aimed to activate a patient's own immune system to target and destroy cancer cells, including cancer stem cells which are often responsible for tumor recurrence. Revenue generation was contingent on the successful clinical development, regulatory approval, and subsequent commercialization or partnership of its product candidates. The primary clients were patients with aggressive cancers, particularly those with brain tumors like glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).

ImmunoCellular's lead product candidate was ICT-107, a dendritic cell-based immunotherapy designed to target six different tumor-associated antigens found on glioblastoma stem cells. In a Phase 1 trial, ICT-107 demonstrated a median overall survival of 38.4 months, a significant increase compared to the historical standard of care. Following these promising results, the company advanced ICT-107 into a larger Phase 2 trial. The pipeline also included ICT-121, another DC immunotherapy targeting the CD133 antigen on stem cells in recurrent glioblastoma, and ICT-140 for ovarian cancer. A research program known as Stem-to-T-cell was also underway to engineer a patient's own stem cells to generate cancer-killing T-cells.

Over the years, the company saw several leadership changes, with Dr. Manish Singh serving as CEO from 2008 to 2012 and Andrew Gengos taking the helm in late 2012. Despite some promising early clinical data, the company faced significant financial challenges. In October 2018, ImmunoCellular announced its intention to voluntarily delist its common stock from the NYSE American due to abnormally low trading prices. In August 2019, the company sold substantially all of its assets, including its clinical programs and intellectual property. The final chapter for the original entity came in December 2021, when ImmunoCellular Therapeutics merged with the privately-held EOM Pharmaceuticals, creating a new public company named EOM Pharmaceuticals Holdings, Inc., which continued to trade under the "IMUC" ticker on the OTC Markets but shifted focus to EOM's pipeline of immunomodulatory and retinal disease agents.
