About Immunicon

In 1983, Paul A. Liberti, a professor of biochemistry and immunology at Thomas Jefferson University, founded Immunicon. The company was built on a foundational idea: to develop technologies that could find and analyze rare cells in the bloodstream. This concept was particularly important for cancer, where cells that break away from a primary tumor and circulate in the blood can indicate the spread of the disease. Immunicon's core mission became the development of products for cancer disease management. The company's key technology was a platform to identify and count circulating tumor cells (CTCs). This led to the development of the CellSearch® system, a diagnostic test designed to automate the detection of these elusive cells. For years, Immunicon focused on research and development, securing partnerships to advance its technology. A significant collaboration began in 2000 with Veridex, a Johnson & Johnson company, to commercialize cancer diagnostic products. In April 2004, Immunicon reached a major milestone with its initial public offering, raising approximately $43 million to fund product commercialization and further research. The company's CellSearch system gained FDA clearance for monitoring patients with metastatic breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer, marking a significant step in cancer diagnostics. However, the journey was not without its challenges. By 2008, Immunicon faced financial difficulties and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This led to the final chapter of its independent story: the acquisition of substantially all its assets by its partner, Veridex, for $31 million. The acquisition ensured the continued development and availability of the groundbreaking CellSearch technology, cementing Immunicon's legacy in the field of cancer diagnostics.
