Thermal energy storage for HVAC systems MoreLess

Ice Energy, founded in 2003 by Brian Parsonnet, Greg Tropsa, and Michael Hopkins, operated as a provider of thermal energy storage solutions. The company focused on reducing peak electricity demand by shifting the energy consumption of air conditioning units to off-peak hours. Its primary clients were utility companies, particularly in California, as well as commercial and residential building owners. The business model centered on selling its energy storage units, known as the Ice Bear, to utilities, which would then deploy them on customer properties. This arrangement provided cost savings to the end-user through lower electricity bills and offered utilities a method for managing peak load on the power grid.

The company's core product was the Ice Bear, a thermal battery that integrated with standard commercial air conditioning systems. The unit operated by freezing water during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper and more abundant. During peak demand periods, typically hot afternoons, the stored ice was used to provide cooling, reducing the air conditioner's electricity consumption by as much as 95%. This process effectively acted as a load-shifting mechanism, helping to balance the grid. For the residential market, Ice Energy developed a smaller version called the Ice Cub. A key milestone was securing a 25.6-megawatt contract with Southern California Edison to deploy its technology. Despite raising significant funding, including a $40 million round in 2018, Ice Energy faced financial challenges. In December 2019, the company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, leading to the liquidation of its assets.
