About HVR Cardio International

HVR Cardio International is a clinical-stage medical technology company established in Finland in 2002, focused on addressing mitral regurgitation (MR), the most prevalent heart valve disorder. The company was founded by Olli Keränen, who serves as the Inventor and Chief Scientist, bringing over three decades of experience in biotech and medtech product development. HVR Cardio operates in the structural heart market, developing minimally invasive solutions for mitral valve repair to serve patients for whom traditional open-heart surgery is too risky. The business model centers on the development and eventual commercialization of its proprietary medical devices to structural heart physicians, with revenue streams expected from product sales post-regulatory approval.

The company's core intellectual property is its patented helix technology, which is the foundation for its two main products: CathHELIX® and the HVR Cardio Annuloplasty Ring (MAR). The CathHELIX® Annuloplasty System is a transcatheter-based device designed for a less invasive repair of the mitral valve. This system allows for the placement of a self-fixating helix-shaped ring that mimics the mitral valve's natural geometry, restoring its function without requiring open-heart surgery or tethering the native valve leaflets. In 2019, the U.S. FDA granted CathHELIX® a Breakthrough Device Designation, highlighting its potential to significantly improve treatment for a serious condition. The MAR device is a surgical version that has already shown positive long-term safety and performance data in clinical evaluations.

A significant milestone was achieved in January 2023 when HVR Cardio secured €10.7 million in a Series B financing round, one of the largest for a Finnish med-tech company. This funding, led by Innovestor Life Science Fund and Tesi, is designated for advancing the CathHELIX® system into human clinical trials and expanding the team. In 2022, the company strengthened its leadership by appointing Tom Fleming as CEO and Tim Girton as CTO. Both Fleming and Girton bring extensive experience from Boston Scientific's structural heart and interventional cardiology divisions, positioning HVR Cardio for its next phase of clinical and commercial development. The company is headquartered in Espoo, Finland, with a U.S. office in Minnesota.
