Patented hot forming quenching technology for aluminum MoreLess

HFQ Technology, formerly Impression Technologies Limited (ITL), is a UK-based advanced manufacturing and engineering company, originally spun out from Imperial College London, specialising in the development and industrialisation of lightweight, high-strength aluminium components. The company was established in January 2013 to commercialise Hot Form Quench (HFQ®) technology, which originated from long-term academic research at the University of Birmingham and Imperial College London. Historically, the company has been led by CEO Jonathan Watkins.

HFQ® is a proprietary aluminium hot-forming and press-hardening process that enables the manufacture of complex, deep-drawn, high-strength aluminium structures that are difficult or impossible to achieve using conventional cold-forming methods. The process involves heating aluminium alloy sheet material, forming it at elevated temperature, and rapidly quenching it within a closed press die. This allows for tight radii, high part complexity, significant depth, and near-zero springback, resulting in excellent dimensional accuracy. Components produced using HFQ® can be 20–50% lighter than equivalent steel or conventional aluminium alternatives while maintaining high structural performance.

Impression Technologies operates a production and prototyping facility in Coventry, UK, supporting low-volume manufacturing, prototyping, and process validation. The company has supplied HFQ-formed components to premium automotive manufacturers, including Aston Martin and Lotus Cars, and has played a key role in demonstrating the industrial viability of the technology.

Historically, a central pillar of ITL’s strategy was technology transfer and licensing, enabling Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs to adopt HFQ® within their own production environments. This included the establishment of a global partner ecosystem and supply chain, supported by engineering services such as design feasibility studies, forming simulation, prototyping, and operator training.

As of 2024, the HFQ® intellectual property, licensing activities, and global technology stewardship transitioned to HFQ Technology Associates (a trading name of DITEVEN Limited). HFQ Technology Associates now leads the commercial development, licensing, and ecosystem management of HFQ® technology globally, while Impression Technologies continues to operate as a separate entity with manufacturing and engineering capabilities.

The primary market for HFQ® technology is the automotive sector, driven by regulatory pressure to reduce CO₂ emissions and the need for lightweight, high-performance structures in electric vehicles. The technology also has applications across aerospace, rail, and industrial manufacturing, where structural efficiency, part integration, and lightweighting are critical.
