About Heartscape

Heartscape Technologies, founded by Robert Carl in December 2005, was a medical device company that developed and marketed advanced cardiology-focused diagnostic equipment. The firm's core intellectual property was licensed from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, where it was developed in collaboration with the Royal Victoria Hospital. The company maintained research and development facilities in Northern Ireland, with sales and operational offices in the United States.

Heartscape's principal offering was the PRIME ECG system, a diagnostic tool designed for the rapid and accurate detection of heart attacks and ischemia, primarily in hospital emergency departments. The system represented a significant step forward from traditional 12-lead electrocardiograms by utilizing a disposable vest containing 80 leads. This 80-lead array provided a comprehensive, 360-degree view of the heart's electrical activity, enabling physicians to identify cardiac events, such as posterior myocardial infarctions, that standard ECGs might miss. The system presented data through both traditional ECG tracings and color-coded 3D graphics on a mobile computer workstation.

Under the leadership of CEO Arthur J. Hiller, who joined in 2006, the company secured a significant $17 million Series B funding round in April 2007. This investment, led by Scottish Equity Partners, was intended to scale the company and launch the PRIME ECG system. In May 2010, Heartscape Technologies was acquired by Roper Technologies. Subsequently, the product was rebranded and introduced in Europe in 2011 by Verathon, a subsidiary of Roper, as the Heartscape™ 3D ECG System.
