Is a transport company operating commercial London red bus routes, yellow school bus routes and Park & Ride services
About HCT Group
In 1982, the story of HCT Group began not in a boardroom, but on the streets of East London. It was founded when 30 local community groups in Hackney decided to pool their vehicle resources to provide low-cost transport for the elderly, disabled, and others who couldn't easily use public transport. Initially operating with just a handful of vehicles and grant funding, it was a classic community-led solution to a local problem. The company’s playbook was rewritten under CEO Dai Powell, who joined in 1993 and transformed the organization. The strategy was simple but powerful: become a full-fledged commercial enterprise to fund its social mission. HCT Group began competing for—and winning—public bus contracts, including iconic red bus routes in London. The profits from these commercial operations were then reinvested into the community transport services, effectively creating a sustainable engine for social good. By the mid-2010s, the fleet had grown to 500 vehicles with a turnover of over £40 million. A major turning point arrived as HCT expanded, acquiring smaller operators across the UK. However, the business model faced its greatest test with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. The combination of lockdown-related financial pressures, followed by a surge in fuel and labor costs, created unsustainable commercial losses. After struggling to recover, the social enterprise that had served its community for four decades ceased trading and entered administration in September 2022, selling its remaining operations to other transport companies.
