In 1959, the company that would become Hathway was incorporated as Chics Display Services Private Limited in Mumbai. The business was initially promoted by the Raheja Group. A pivotal moment came in 1999 when the company was renamed Hathway Cable & Datacom and it acquired Business India Television (BITV) Cable Networks Pvt Ltd. The company's journey into the digital frontier began in March 2000, when it ventured into providing broadband internet services. This move positioned Hathway as a pioneer, becoming the first cable television provider in India to offer high-speed internet over its CATV network. They continued to innovate, launching a digital platform in 2006. By 2009, Hathway had reached one million digital cable television subscribers. A major turning point in the company's story occurred in October 2018 when Reliance Industries announced it would acquire a majority stake. Reliance Industries acquired a 51.34% stake for ₹2,940 crore (US$350 million), a deal that received approval from the Competition Commission of India in January 2019. Following an open offer in March 2019, Reliance increased its total stake to 71.95%, solidifying Hathway's position within the Reliance conglomerate.
