In 1981, Peter Hargreaves and Stephen Lansdown started their business from a spare bedroom. They began by providing information to clients on unit trusts and tax planning, essentially acting as an advisory service. This was a direct-to-consumer model, a relatively novel approach at the time, cutting out the traditional intermediary financial adviser. The business, Hargreaves Lansdown, identified a clear need. Individuals wanted to make their own investment decisions but lacked easy access to information and the tools to do so. The company's platform provided that access. It simplified the process of investing for the retail customer, offering a wide range of funds and shares in one place. A pivotal moment arrived in May 2007 when Hargreaves Lansdown went public on the London Stock Exchange. This Initial Public Offering valued the company significantly and marked a new chapter of growth and public scrutiny. The IPO provided the capital to further develop their platform and expand their client base. More recently, the company has faced takeover interest. In May 2024, it was reported that a consortium including CVC, Nordic Capital, and Platinum Ivy, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, had made a proposal to acquire the company.
