About Guruji

Guruji.com was a crawler-based search engine launched in October 2006 from Bengaluru, India, with the specific aim of serving the Indian internet user base. The company was co-founded by Anurag Dod and Gaurav Mishra, both graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The founders, who had experience in the US tech industry, including at search engine firms, identified a market opportunity for a search engine focused on local Indian content, inspired by the success of national search engines in markets like China and Korea.

The platform's core offering was a search engine that used proprietary algorithms to crawl and index India-specific web pages, aiming to provide more relevant results for local queries. Initially, its database contained around 30 million pages. Beyond general web search, Guruji.com offered vertical search products for images, finance, movies, and city-specific services. It also supported searches in several Indian languages, including Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada, to cater to a diverse user base. The business model was expected to be a pay-per-click model, similar to other major search engines at the time.

The startup showed early promise, securing a total of $15 million in funding over two rounds from notable venture capital firms, including Sequoia Capital, Sandstone Capital, and WestBridge Capital. The initial funding round was for $7 million in October 2006, followed by a Series B round of $8 million in January 2007. However, the company's trajectory was drastically altered by legal challenges. In April 2010, CEO Anurag Dod was arrested following a criminal complaint of copyright infringement filed by music label T-Series. The complaint alleged that the platform's popular music search feature facilitated the download of copyrighted songs. While the company argued it was merely a search tool and did not host the content, the legal battle and the CEO's arrest had severe consequences. Following the controversy, Guruji.com shut down its music search feature and, eventually, the entire website ceased operations, becoming a defunct company.
