Guorou
An online school provides extracurricular training courses
About Guorou
Guorou School (果肉网校), operated by Guangzhou Pulp Education Technology Co., Ltd., emerged in the K12 online education sector with a strategic focus on localized learning, initially targeting the South China market. The company was established on May 10, 2018. It originated from the online course division of Zoyou Education, a prominent after-school education provider in Southern China, and was spun off to operate independently in May 2019.
The company's founder, Zhu Ting, brought significant internet industry experience to the venture, having previously served as the general manager of the UC Browser division within the Alibaba Mobile Business Group. His background includes founding Shénsuànzǐ Education Technology in 2016, a company focused on K12 educational assessment. This experience informed Guorou's data-driven approach. The co-founder, Liang Jinwen, was a founding team member of New Oriental's U-Can and a former product director at Zoyou Education.
Guorou School provided live online tutoring services covering all subjects for elementary and middle school students. The business model centered on attracting a broad base of students, particularly focusing on the average student cohort rather than solely on top-performers. Revenue was generated from fees for online courses. A key operational strategy was its regional focus, which allowed for a combination of online advertising, local ground promotion, and private domain traffic to acquire users effectively within specific cultural contexts. The platform emphasized a student-centric experience, investing over ten million yuan in its own interactive live broadcast and teaching technology to make classes more engaging, comparing the ideal lesson to a movie or a game. This system provided teachers with real-time data on student participation and comprehension.
In February 2020, Guorou announced the completion of its Series A and A+ financing rounds, raising over 100 million RMB. Investors included Qingliu Capital, Toutoutshi Dao Investment Fund, ZhenFund, and Weiguang Venture Capital. By late 2020, reports surfaced of an acquisition by mobile phone manufacturer OPPO, with the Guorou team even moving into OPPO's Shenzhen offices. However, in July 2021, amidst a broader industry downturn, the company abruptly announced its dissolution, providing employees with an "N+1" severance package and ceasing operations.
