GreenCheck
Intermediary redistributing resources to grassroots climate initiatives
About GreenCheck
GreenCheck is a youth-led nonprofit organization that functions as an intermediary to promote global climate justice. It was conceptualized in the fall of 2020 by co-founder Bev and officially launched in July 2021 by a group of five co-founders and peers from Yale-NUS College and Yale University. The founding team, including students like Anastasia Kurniadi, Angela, and Beatrice Baquero-Salah, came together through the Global University Climate Forum, motivated by their experiences in campus environmental movements to address gaps in the broader climate movement. They identified a need to redirect more resources to frontline changemakers and to cultivate better climate allies.
The organization's core mission is to redistribute resources, such as funding and capacity-building support, to community-led climate initiatives, primarily in the Most Affected Peoples and Areas (MAPA). This term includes regions in the Global South like Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, as well as marginalized communities in the Global North. GreenCheck addresses the systemic barriers these grassroots organizations face in accessing resources, which are often delivered ineffectively or within colonial frameworks. The business model is that of a nonprofit intermediary and climate ally incubator. It operates as a donation platform, resource hub, and community network, making money through donations from individual and institutional supporters, as well as collaborative fundraising campaigns with artists and creators. These funds are then channeled to its partners as flexible, trust-based grants.
GreenCheck provides a range of services for its partners and supporters. For its partner organizations—such as Pacto X El Clima (Colombia), Klima Action Malaysia, and Abayuuti Climate Action Network (Uganda)—it offers a fundraising channel, a supportive youth network, and needs-based assistance. For its supporters, it provides a community of learning, opportunities to connect directly with partners, and operational transparency. One of its key programs is the GreenCheck Solidarity Academy (GSA), a paid internship program that connects young people with partner organizations for hands-on project experience, offering a monthly stipend to interns. Since its launch, the organization has mobilized over $25,000 for grassroots climate action.
