Green Car
App-based car-sharing service for short-term rentals
About Green Car
Greencar Co., Ltd., which now operates under the brand name Lotte Rent-a-Car G car, is a pioneering car-sharing company in South Korea. Established in December 2009, the company launched the country's first commercial car-sharing service in September 2011, preceding its main competitor, Socar. The service allows users to rent vehicles for short periods, starting from a minimum of 30 minutes and bookable in 10-minute increments, through a mobile application.
The company's business model is centered on providing convenient, non-face-to-face vehicle access 24/7 from numerous designated parking zones called "G car Zones" or "Green Zones". The business operates on a pay-per-use basis, where fees are calculated based on the rental duration and distance driven. The entire process, from reservation to unlocking the vehicle, is handled through the G car smartphone app, which functions as a smart key. The platform serves individuals who need a car for various purposes such as dates, business trips, shopping, or travel without the burden of ownership. In 2019, the company expanded its services by launching 'Car Wash Cling', a non-face-to-face, eco-friendly car wash service.
Greencar has undergone several ownership changes. In 2013, KT Rental acquired the company, and subsequently, Lotte Group acquired KT Rental in 2015, making Greencar a subsidiary of Lotte Rental. Lotte Rental itself has been a dominant force in Asia's rental car market. In September 2024, the service was rebranded from Green Car to Lotte Rent-a-Car G car. More recently, in early 2025, private equity firm Affinity Equity Partners agreed to acquire a controlling stake in Lotte Rental, which will operate Lotte Rental and its G car service as a separate entity from its other acquisition, SK Rent-a-Car.
The company's fleet includes a variety of vehicle types, from compact cars to SUVs and hybrid vehicles, to cater to different customer needs. Key features of the service include the 'Smart Welcome' function, which uses BLE technology to unlock the car as the user approaches, and a smart key on the app for functions like locking/unlocking and locating the vehicle. The company emphasizes vehicle cleanliness and maintenance, leveraging the extensive service network of its parent company, Lotte Rental, to ensure vehicle reliability.
