The company's journey began in 2009 in Hamburg, Germany, when Systems Architect Lennart Koopmann started a side project named 'Torch' to address the high cost and usability issues he encountered with existing log management solutions. This open-source project aimed to offer a more affordable and efficient way to manage machine data. In 2012, Haas Chapman joined to assist with administration, and by July 2013, both founders left their jobs to dedicate themselves to the project full-time, rebranding it as Graylog. The company, Graylog, Inc., was formally incorporated in the U.S. on December 8, 2014, after Koopmann relocated to Houston. A significant milestone was the launch of its first commercial offering in 2016, making its enterprise product available. More recently, in July 2023, Graylog acquired Resurface.io, a data-driven API security platform, to broaden its security offerings.

Graylog's core product is a centralized platform designed to capture, store, and facilitate real-time analysis of vast amounts of machine data. It operates on a three-tier architecture using OpenSearch and MongoDB for scalable storage. The platform provides Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) capabilities, enabling threat detection, security analytics, and incident response.
