Gramercy Extremity Orthopedics (GEO), founded in 2014, is a Texas-based medical device company focused on improving the delivery of orthopedic implants. The venture was initially bootstrapped by its founders, Michael P. Simpson and Dr. Paul Vasta, who later secured significant venture capital to advance their technology. Simpson, the CEO, brings over two decades of experience in orthopedic management, including a past role as President of Global Spine at Orthofix, along with a background in supply chain logistics using RFID. This experience was foundational to GEO's core concept. Vasta, the Chief Technology Officer, has a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and extensive experience in medical device R&D, which has been instrumental in developing the company's proprietary systems.

GEO's business model centers on providing a streamlined inventory management and point-of-sale system for hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). The company addresses common operating room inefficiencies such as implant availability, sterilization burdens, and administrative overhead. Revenue is generated through the sale of its single-use, sterile-packaged orthopedic implants and instruments, which are managed and dispensed via its proprietary GEO CART® system.

The cornerstone of GEO's offering is the GEO CART®, a computerized, mobile inventory system that uses RFID technology to track implants and instruments in real-time. This system can hold over 2,000 items and is designed to reduce surgical delays, minimize sterility risks, and automate administrative tasks like generating implant usage forms. When a sterile-packaged product is used, its RFID tag is scanned by the cart, which automatically populates an implant usage form and connects to an ERP system for seamless inventory replenishment. GEO's product line includes a variety of orthopedic solutions, such as bone screw systems, nitinol staples, plating systems for foot and ankle procedures, and biologic tissues. Each implant and instrument is provided in a sterile, single-use kit, ensuring product integrity and reducing the facility's need for in-house sterilization of complex trays.
