About GoPay

GoPay operates as the financial technology arm of GoTo Group, Indonesia's largest digital ecosystem which was formed by the 2021 merger of Gojek and Tokopedia. Initially launched in 2016 as a digital wallet within the Gojek super-app, GoPay's creation was a direct response to customer feedback seeking a simpler, cashless way to pay for rides and services. The parent company, Gojek, was founded in 2010 by Nadiem Makarim, Kevin Aluwi, and Michaelangelo Moran, starting as a call center with just 20 motorcycle taxi drivers. Makarim, a Harvard Business School graduate with experience at McKinsey & Co., identified an inefficiency in how ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers and customers connected, which inspired the creation of the platform.

GoPay has since evolved from an in-app payment feature into a comprehensive financial services provider. It operates within the Indonesian market, serving millions of individual users and a vast network of merchants, from large corporations to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The business model generates revenue through commission fees charged to merchants for transactions processed via the platform and service charges to consumers for certain services. In July 2023, aiming to reach users beyond the Gojek and Tokopedia platforms, GoPay launched a standalone, lightweight mobile application of less than 25MB, specifically designed to be accessible for Indonesians with limited smartphone storage and to drive financial inclusion among the unbanked population.

For consumers, GoPay functions as a digital wallet for a wide array of transactions, including payments within the GoTo ecosystem (GoRide, GoFood), online and in-store purchases via QRIS code scan, bill payments for over 1,500 digital services, and peer-to-peer balance transfers. The service portfolio also includes features like GoPayLater (a buy-now-pay-later option), GoTagihan for bill payments, and GoPay Coins, a rewards program. To address the needs of its business clients, GoTo Financial launched the GoPay Merchant app in July 2024. This dedicated application provides MSMEs with tools for easier QRIS registration, flexible fund disbursement to manage cash flow, and enhanced security through features like the GoPay Spiker, a device that provides real-time voice notifications for successful payments to prevent fraud.
