Continuous intravascular glucose monitoring system for tight glycemic control (TGC) in the hospital
About GlySure
GlySure Limited was a medical device company focused on the critical care market, specifically addressing the need for tight glycemic control (TGC) in hospital intensive care units (ICUs).
Founded in May 2006 and based in Abingdon, England, the company was co-founded by Barry Crane, who served as the Chief Technology Officer. Crane brought over 25 years of experience in the medical device industry, including directing the development of the first intravascular optical blood gas sensor at Pfizer. The management team also included CEO Chris Jones, who joined in 2008 with extensive experience in the medical device and diagnostic industry. The firm identified a significant market opportunity based on clinical data showing that maintaining stable glucose levels in ICU patients could reduce mortality and morbidity.
GlySure developed the world's first Continuous Intravascular Glucose Monitoring System (CIGMS). This system was designed for critically ill patients, a market estimated to be worth over $5 billion globally. The product consisted of three main components: a monitor, a disposable fiber optic sensor, and a standard disposable central venous catheter. Its proprietary optical fluorescence sensor technology allowed for the real-time, continuous measurement of a patient's intravascular glucose levels, with readings as frequent as every 15 seconds. This provided immediate feedback to clinicians, enabling them to prevent dangerous glucose fluctuations and improve patient outcomes. The system aimed to replace intermittent manual blood testing, offering a more accurate and efficient method for glucose management in settings like adult cardiac surgery ICUs.
The company's business model revolved around selling the monitoring system and disposable components to hospitals and critical care centers. GlySure successfully raised significant venture capital, securing a total of $24.5 million over several funding rounds from investors including Amadeus Capital Partners, Delta Partners, and Morningside Venture. A key milestone was achieved in July 2015 when the company obtained a CE Mark for its CIGMS, permitting its sale in Europe. Following this approval, GlySure planned a commercial launch in the UK, Benelux, and Germany, while also preparing for clinical trials to support FDA submission in the United States. However, company records indicate a liquidation bankruptcy status as of September 2022.
