Founded in 2017 by Eli Brown, a former employee of Facebook and Xbox, Guilded originated from his desire to create a more integrated solution for managing gaming teams, aiming to replace the scattered use of website builders, forums, and calendars. The company participated in Y Combinator's Summer 2017 batch and raised over $10.2 million in funding from investors like Susa Ventures and Initialized Capital before its acquisition. On August 16, 2021, Roblox Corporation acquired Guilded for $90 million. Following the acquisition, Guilded began integrating with the Roblox ecosystem, announcing in 2024 that users would need to link a Roblox account to use the service.

The platform operates on a freemium model, offering its core suite of tools, such as high-resolution video chat, unlimited emotes, and robust customization options, at no cost to attract users and communities. It provides specialized features like server groups, which function as servers within a server, allowing for more organized community management. Its primary audience consists of gamers, esports teams, and community leaders seeking comprehensive tools for communication, recruitment, and event organization.
