GeoLearning
Provider of managed services and on-demand performance and learning platforms
About GeoLearning
GeoLearning, founded in 1997 by Frank Russell and Linda Russell, was a notable player in the learning management system (LMS) market, pioneering the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model for corporate training. The company began in the basement of its founders' home in West Des Moines, Iowa, and grew into a significant enterprise. Frank Russell, who served as CEO, brought extensive experience in human resource technology, having previously founded Excellence in Training Corporation and worked with early computer-based training systems like the Plato System.
The firm provided a web-based, on-demand LMS platform designed for corporate internal training, talent management, and external customer education initiatives. Its business model centered on offering its learning platforms, GeoMaestro and GeoExpress, through an Application Service Provider (ASP) model, which allowed for rapid deployment without new hardware or software installation for the client. This strategy appealed to a wide range of clients, including Fortune 1000 companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Prominent customers included Dell, Costco, and Google, which utilized the platform for customer training applications. Revenue was generated through subscriptions to its platform and a suite of managed services that included content development, reporting, and e-commerce functionalities.
GeoLearning's platform was recognized for its robust registration, tracking, and reporting capabilities. The company's focus on a "total solutions" approach meant it provided not just the technology but also comprehensive services to support its clients' learning objectives. This customer-centric strategy contributed to its high customer satisfaction ratings. In February 2008, GeoLearning secured its first institutional investment, a $31 million Series C funding round from investors including Volition Capital and Fidelity Ventures, to fuel sales, marketing, and international expansion.
After more than a decade of operation and significant growth, GeoLearning was acquired by SumTotal Systems on January 5, 2011, for a reported $110 million. At the time of the acquisition, GeoLearning had around 700 customers and approximately $40 million in revenue, establishing it as one of the largest LMS providers for the mid-market. The acquisition was a strategic move by SumTotal to expand its market share, particularly in the mid-sized enterprise segment, and to gain access to GeoLearning's established presence in government and customer education markets. Following the acquisition, founder Frank Russell departed the company.
