About GeoEye
GeoEye, originally established as Orbital Imaging Corporation (ORBIMAGE) in 1992, was a significant entity in the commercial satellite imagery sector. It was initially a division of Orbital Sciences Corporation, which was spurred by the 1992 Land Remote Sensing Policy Act that opened the door for private companies in the satellite imaging business. The company was spun off in 1997 and later rebranded as GeoEye in 2006 following its strategic acquisition of Space Imaging for $58 million. This acquisition was a pivotal moment, bringing the IKONOS satellite, a primary asset of Space Imaging, into its fold. The company's journey culminated in a merger with DigitalGlobe on January 29, 2013, in a deal valued at approximately $900 million.
GeoEye's business centered on providing high-resolution Earth imagery and geospatial intelligence to a diverse client base. A primary customer was the U.S. government, particularly the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), with which GeoEye held major contracts for reconnaissance and imagery data. Beyond government contracts, the company served a variety of commercial markets, including online mapping, with notable agreements to supply satellite map images to major tech companies like Microsoft, Yahoo!, and Google. Its business model involved direct sales and a global network of resellers and distributors, which made its imagery and derived products accessible worldwide.
The company operated a constellation of Earth observation satellites, each with distinct capabilities. The IKONOS satellite, launched in 1999, was the first to offer sub-meter resolution color imagery commercially. A key asset in their fleet was the GeoEye-1 satellite, launched in 2008. This satellite was capable of providing imagery with a resolution of 41 centimeters (16 inches) in panchromatic mode and 1.65 meters in multispectral mode. This technology positioned GeoEye to cater to applications demanding high precision, such as national security, disaster response, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure management. The company also had plans for the next-generation GeoEye-2, designed to offer even higher resolution, though its launch was deferred and later occurred under the name WorldView-4 after the merger with DigitalGlobe. GeoEye offered a suite of products, including basic imagery, orthorectified images, stereo imagery, digital elevation models (DEMs), and large-area mosaics.
