GENUSION
Semiconductor memory technology and memory solutions
About GENUSION
GENUSION, established in November 2002 by President and CEO Moriyoshi Nakashima, operated as a fabless semiconductor venture from Hyogo, Japan. The firm was centered on the development and commercialization of a next-generation flash memory technology known as B4-Flash memory. This core technology was the result of a collaborative open innovation effort involving GENUSION's engineers, many of whom came from major semiconductor manufacturers, and academic institutions including Osaka University, Tohoku University, and the Indian Institute of Technology.
The company's business model was to design and sell its proprietary memory solutions without owning manufacturing facilities, instead partnering with large semiconductor companies for production. GENUSION aimed to penetrate global markets for consumer electronics, automotive applications, mobile phones, and gaming. Revenue was to be generated through the sale of its memory products and by licensing its B4-Flash memory intellectual property. The business targeted corporate clients, such as law and accounting firms, that required a high degree of data security.
GENUSION’s flagship technology, B4-Flash memory, offered significant advantages over conventional NAND and NOR type flash memories, including substantially faster write and erase speeds and high data retention reliability, even after numerous rewrite cycles and at elevated temperatures. A key product developed was the "CE-File Memory," a USB device that featured complete data erasure capabilities, a distinct security advantage over standard USB drives where data can often be recovered after deletion. This product also included features like automatic data deletion after a specified time and hardware-based AES256bit encryption.
A significant milestone was in May 2010, when the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) decided to invest up to ¥2.6 billion to support the commercialization of its technology. However, the company faced difficulties in sustaining its operations. Despite efforts to continue independently and explore partnerships, GENUSION entered bankruptcy proceedings in December 2016, which led to INCJ revoking its investment decision.
