About Genscript Technology
Genscript Biotech Corporation operates as a global biotechnology company, providing life science research services and products. Founded in 2002 in New Jersey by Fangliang Zhang, Ye Wang, and Luquan Wang, the company initially focused on gene synthesis. Frank Fangliang Zhang, a key founder, identified an opportunity to expand biotech into China after obtaining his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University and working at Schering-Plough, where he received the President's Award for his research. The company was started with $5,000 amongst three friends.
Genscript has since expanded its operations globally, with a significant research and production base established in Nanjing, China, in 2004. The firm went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2015, raising approximately $67.2 million. This capital infusion facilitated further investment in research and development. The company's business is structured into four main segments: a life-science services and products platform, a biologics development (CDMO) platform under its subsidiary ProBio, an industrial synthetic biology products platform via its Bestzyme subsidiary, and a cell therapy platform through its subsidiary Legend Biotech. Legend Biotech was notably listed on the NASDAQ in 2020.
The company's revenue is generated from a diverse portfolio. The life-science division offers a comprehensive range of services including gene synthesis, peptide synthesis, protein production, antibody development, and CRISPR gene editing tools. It serves a broad client base of over 200,000 customers in more than 100 countries, including academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies. ProBio provides end-to-end contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) services for cell and gene therapies, as well as antibody and recombinant protein drugs. The industrial synthetic biology arm focuses on products like enzymes. A significant achievement includes the development of Carvykti, a CAR-T cell therapy for multiple myeloma, in collaboration with Janssen Biotech, which received FDA approval in 2022. Additionally, Genscript developed and manufactured the cPass serology test for COVID-19, which received FDA emergency use authorization in 2020.
