GenMark Diagnostics, Inc., established in 2010 through the merger of Osmetech and Nanosphere, carved a significant niche in the molecular diagnostics market before its acquisition by Roche in 2021. The company was founded to provide advanced diagnostic solutions to enhance patient care. Jon Faiz Kayyem, a Caltech Ph.D. holder with a background in chemistry and a history of inventing technologies and founding companies, played a pivotal role as the founder, president, and CEO of Clinical Micro Sensors, which later became GenMark. His expertise in electrochemical DNA detection was central to the company's technological foundation. Hany Massarany later served as the president and CEO, bringing extensive experience from the diagnostics industry, including a long tenure at Ventana Medical Systems.

GenMark's core business centered on developing and commercializing multiplex molecular diagnostic tests. These tests were designed to detect multiple pathogens from a single patient sample, a critical function for labs in hospitals and clinics. The company's operations were primarily focused on the infectious disease sector, providing tools to identify the causes of respiratory, bloodstream, and gastrointestinal infections. The business model was based on the sale of its diagnostic systems and the accompanying single-use test cartridges. This created a recurring revenue stream, as customers who purchased the systems would continuously need to buy consumables for testing.

The flagship product was the ePlex® system, marketed as a "True Sample-to-Answer Solution." This system streamlined the laboratory workflow by automating the entire diagnostic process from sample entry to final result, a significant benefit for busy clinical laboratories. The ePlex platform utilized proprietary electrochemical detection technology, which allowed for the rapid and accurate identification of infectious agents. A key selling point was its ability to deliver comprehensive results in under two hours, enabling clinicians to make faster, more informed treatment decisions, which in turn could improve patient outcomes and lower the overall cost of care. The system's test menu was extensive, covering a broad panel of viral and bacterial targets for respiratory illnesses (RP panel) and bloodstream infections (BCID panels), among others. Following a competitive bidding process, Roche acquired GenMark Diagnostics for approximately $1.8 billion, integrating GenMark's innovative ePlex system and its diagnostics portfolio into Roche's broader offerings.
