About Genera Energy

Genera Energy is a manufacturer of domestically sourced, non-wood agricultural pulp and molded fiber products. The company was founded in 2008 by Dr. Kelly Tiller as a spin-out from the University of Tennessee Research Foundation to commercialize the use of switchgrass for cellulosic fuel. Initially focused on supplying agricultural crops as raw materials for biofuels and chemicals, the company pivoted around 2018 to focus on producing sustainable packaging.

Operating from its headquarters in Vonore, Tennessee, Genera runs the largest vertically integrated non-wood agricultural pulp and molded fiber manufacturing facility in North America. The company partners with local farmers to grow perennial grasses like switchgrass and biomass sorghum, which are then converted into pulp and finished goods at its integrated facility. This business model supports rural economies and promotes the onshoring of sustainable packaging supply chains. The production process is designed to be efficient in its use of energy and water.

Genera's main product line, marketed under the brand Earthable®, includes compostable and biodegradable items such as takeout containers, plates, bowls, and other food and consumer packaging. These products serve as an alternative to those made from plastics and polystyrene. The company offers its non-wood pulp as a raw material to other manufacturers for products like paper, tissue, and towel.

In June 2022, Genera was acquired by Ara Partners, a private equity firm focused on industrial decarbonization. Ara Partners committed up to an additional $200 million to expand Genera's production capacity and develop more manufacturing facilities across the United States. Prior investors, including WindSail Capital Group, Coppermine Capital, and Stairway Capital, retained a minority stake in the company. As of late 2023, Ben Mascarello serves as CEO, with founder Dr. Kelly Tiller as Chief Strategy Officer.
