About Genelux
Genelux Corporation (NASDAQ: GNLX) is a late clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, founded in 2001, that is focused on developing oncolytic immunotherapies to treat patients with difficult-to-treat solid tumors. The company's business model revolves around the discovery, development, and eventual commercialization of its therapeutic candidates. As a clinical-stage company, Genelux does not currently generate revenue from product sales and its operations are funded through public and private financing. The company went public in January 2023, raising approximately $15 million in its initial public offering. It operates from its headquarters in Westlake Village, California, with additional research and development facilities in San Diego.
Aladar A. Szalay, Ph.D., founded the company and retired in 2014, after which Thomas D. Zindrick took over as President and CEO. Zindrick brought extensive experience from his 16-year career at Amgen, where he held roles such as Vice President, Associate General Counsel, and Chief Compliance Officer. His background in life sciences, law, and corporate compliance, including a B.A. in Biology, relates directly to navigating the complex scientific and regulatory pathways of biopharmaceutical development.
The core of the company's research is its proprietary CHOICE™ discovery platform, which has been used to create a library of over 500 engineered oncolytic vaccinia viruses. Genelux's lead product candidate is Olvi-Vec (olvimulogene nanivacirepvec), a modified vaccinia virus. Olvi-Vec is designed with a triple mode of action: it selectively replicates in and kills cancer cells, stimulates a tumor-specific immune response, and converts the tumor microenvironment from an immunosuppressive 'cold' state to an immunoreactive 'hot' state. This process can potentially reverse resistance to treatments like chemotherapy. The therapy is currently in a Phase 3 registrational trial for Platinum-Resistant/Refractory Ovarian Cancer (PRROC). The U.S. FDA has granted Fast Track designation for Olvi-Vec in this indication. Beyond ovarian cancer, Olvi-Vec is also being evaluated in clinical trials for small-cell and non-small-cell lung cancers. The company's strategy includes forming collaborations, such as its joint venture V2ACT Therapeutics, to develop combination therapies.
