About G-cluster

G-cluster was a Finnish cloud gaming company founded in 2000 by Erik Piehl. The firm was an early pioneer in cloud gaming technology, which enables users to stream and play video games on various devices without the need for high-end hardware by processing the games on remote servers. Its technology was first demonstrated at the E3 conference in 2000.

The company's business model focused on providing a white-label service to telecommunication and IPTV operators. This allowed operators to offer a branded cloud gaming service to their subscribers as an added value to their existing entertainment packages. The first commercial rollout of G-cluster's service was with CYTA, an IPTV network, in 2005. A significant milestone was the launch of a commercial service with French operator SFR in 2010, which followed extensive beta testing and brought the service to a wider audience through IPTV set-top boxes. The service streamed games from publishers like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Square Enix. To access the service, users could utilize devices like the G-cluster Game Machine, a small device that plugged into a TV's HDMI port, or play via apps on smartphones and tablets.

Over the years, G-cluster secured investments from major telecom carriers such as Orange, SFR, and NTT. In 2004, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of a SoftBank subsidiary. The company's global operations filed for bankruptcy, leading to the end of the service on May 23, 2016. Subsequently, Japan's Broadmedia Corporation acquired G-cluster in July 2016 and maintained the platform's assets. The service was ultimately retired on February 28, 2025.
