About Front Row Education
Front Row Education emerged as a key player in the K-8 educational technology space, focusing on adaptive learning. The venture was initiated in 2013 by co-founders Sidharth Kakkar and Alexandr Kurilin. Their journey began with a month-long immersion in a Baltimore inner-city school, where they directly observed student challenges in mathematics and programmed an application at night to address them. This hands-on, rapid-prototyping approach defined the company's development philosophy from its inception. Kakkar, with a background in engineering, finance, and an MBA from Kellogg, was driven by a long-held vision to start a software company, a goal he articulated even before his business school tenure. His early, challenging experience with programming in high school ultimately blossomed into a passion, shaping his path to creating an educational tool that could prevent other students from feeling similarly discouraged.
The company's core business centered on a platform designed to personalize mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) practice for students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. The business operated on a freemium model; teachers could create free accounts and use the core practice program, which started with a diagnostic test to place students at their appropriate learning level. Revenue was generated through a paid, school-wide edition that offered advanced reporting and data analytics for teachers and administrators to track student progress and target instruction. The platform served individual students, teachers, and entire school districts by providing a tool for differentiated instruction, allowing each student to work at their own pace.
The product was an adaptive learning program, initially for the iPad and later as a web application, aligned with the Common Core standards. Its primary feature was delivering personalized practice based on a student's individual skill level, identified through an initial diagnostic. If a student struggled, the program would provide scaffolding with easier problems, while those who mastered concepts could advance to higher-level topics. For teachers, the platform offered a dashboard with real-time data, highlighting where students were stuck and enabling targeted, small-group instruction. The service was gamified, rewarding students with virtual coins to maintain engagement. In a significant strategic move, Front Row Education rebranded as Freckle Education in April 2018, a name chosen to reflect the uniqueness of every student. This evolution culminated in May 2019, when the company was acquired by Renaissance Learning, a major educational software and assessment provider. Co-founders Kakkar and Kurilin stayed on following the acquisition, which aimed to integrate Freckle's differentiated practice tools with Renaissance's suite of products like Star Math and Accelerated Math.
