Friendly Stranger Cannabis Culture Shop
About Friendly Stranger
In 1994, long before cannabis legalization was a reality in Canada, Robin Ellins started Friendly Stranger on Queen Street West in Toronto. It began not just as a shop for cannabis accessories, but as a vehicle for activism. Ellins, who had a personal run-in with the law over cannabis possession, aimed to educate the public and advocate for legislative change, using the storefront to fund these efforts. For a quarter-century, Friendly Stranger established itself as a cultural hub, building a loyal community around the push for legalization. When Canada legalized cannabis in 2018, the company's mission shifted. The goal evolved from activism to becoming a fully licensed cannabis retailer. To fund this expansion, Friendly Stranger partnered with private investment fund Green Acre Capital, securing $10 million to open new locations across Ontario. This new chapter brought rapid growth. Friendly Stranger Holdings Corp. was formed, acquiring other local brands like Happy Dayz and HOTBOX to broaden its market reach. The playbook was working, but the story had another turn. In late 2020, Fire & Flower Holdings Corp. announced it would acquire Friendly Stranger in a deal that created Canada's largest cannabis retail footprint. The acquisition brought Friendly Stranger and its associated brands into a national, multi-banner operation, solidifying the legacy of a small activist shop into a major player in the legal Canadian cannabis market.
