FPR Energy
Using particle-based Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) technology to provide zero-emission, 24/7 heat and power
About FPR Energy
FPR Energy emerges from Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, as a pivotal player in the decarbonization of heavy industries. The company was established as a co-founded venture by CSIRO, the advisory and funds management firm RFC Ambrian, and the Japanese utility Osaka Gas. This collaboration secured a landmark A$15 million (~$10 million) in seed funding, the largest for a CSIRO co-founded entity, to commercialize its particle-based Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) technology. The technology itself is the culmination of years of research at CSIRO's Energy Centre in Newcastle, developed through the Australian Solar Thermal Research Institute (ASTRI) with backing from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
The core of FPR Energy's business is a CST system designed to provide zero-emissions, 24/7 heat and power, specifically targeting hard-to-abate sectors like minerals refining, steel, cement, and chemical production. The business model revolves around offering customizable CST solutions, from turnkey particle systems to specialized engineering, to provide an alternative to fossil fuels for high-temperature industrial processes. The system functions by using a field of heliostats (mirrors) to concentrate sunlight onto a central receiver. Inside the receiver, a cascade of small, low-cost ceramic particles is heated to temperatures proven at 850°C and achievable up to 1,200°C. These heated particles, which are durable and flow smoothly like a liquid, are then stored in insulated silos, acting as a thermal battery with the capacity for up to 24 hours of energy storage. When needed, the heat is dispatched via heat exchangers to power industrial processes or generate electricity. This approach offers a significant advantage over traditional solar PV by providing continuous, on-demand energy.
The technology's key personnel includes Greg Wilson, the senior technology advisor, who was integral to the CSIRO team that developed the particle-based CST and led its spin-out into FPR Energy. Wil Gardner, the incoming COO, brings over 30 years of engineering and project management experience, including 16 years in CST R&D, and was also part of the core CSIRO team. The company is headquartered at CSIRO's Energy Centre in Newcastle and is planning to develop a 50 MW thermal demonstration plant with up to 16 hours of storage to prove the commercial viability of its technology at a utility scale.
