About fotopedia

Fotopedia was a collaborative photo encyclopedia and application suite for travel and discovery. It was established by Fotonauts, Inc. in 2008 and officially launched in June 2009. The company was founded by five former Apple employees: Jean-Marie Hullot, Bertrand Guiheneuf, Manuel Colom, Sébastien Maury, and Olivier Gutknecht. Hullot, who served as CEO, was a notable computer scientist who had previously worked at NeXT with Steve Jobs and later as CTO of Apple's application division, where he was instrumental in the early development of the iPhone and created programs like iCal and iSync.

The platform functioned as a visual encyclopedia, allowing users—both professional photographers and amateurs—to create articles driven by photos. These articles could be enhanced with information from Wikipedia and Google Maps. The service operated a curated model where users could only add a limited number of photos daily, which helped maintain a high standard of quality for the content. Fotopedia also incorporated social networking elements, such as user profiles and interaction capabilities. A significant feature was its support for Creative Commons licenses, enabling the reuse of images. Joichi Ito, then CEO of Creative Commons, was a member of the company's board.

Fotopedia's business model evolved, initially attempting to generate revenue through an ad-based model and later forming a partnership with Expedia to facilitate travel bookings. The company launched 15 iOS applications that were available in nine languages and recorded over 3 billion image views by late 2012. Despite raising over $10 million in funding from investors like Ignition Partners, Kreaxi, and Uncork Capital, the company struggled to find a sustainable business model. On July 31, 2014, Fotopedia announced it was shutting down, stating that they did not believe there was a suitable business in their storytelling concept at the time. The service officially ceased operations on August 10, 2014, and all user data was deleted from the servers.
