The innovator in machine learning-based User and entity behavior analytics (UEBA) for security MoreLess
Fortscale specialized in cybersecurity, focusing on User and Entity Behavioral Analytics (UEBA) to identify and counteract insider threats. The company was established in 2012 by Idan Tendler and Dr. Yona Hollander, both of whom brought extensive experience from Israel's technology and defense sectors. Tendler, the CEO, previously served as an officer in the Israeli Intelligence Corps' Unit 8200 and later established the Cyber Security Business Group at Elbit Systems. This background in cyber warfare and intelligence provided a strong foundation for developing a platform to address subtle security threats.
The company developed a platform that utilized machine learning and predictive big data analytics to monitor user behavior within a corporate network. By establishing a baseline of normal activity for each user, the system could automatically detect deviations and anomalies that might indicate a threat, such as compromised credentials, privilege abuse, or data exfiltration. This allowed security operation centers (SOCs) to move beyond traditional rule-based systems and uncover previously hard-to-detect risks.
Fortscale's business model included offering its UEBA engine as both a standalone solution for SOCs and as an embeddable engine, called Presidio, for other security vendors. This embeddable model allowed security infrastructure companies (like SIEM, EDR, and IAM providers) to integrate Fortscale's behavioral analytics directly into their own products, enhancing their threat detection capabilities without needing to build the technology from scratch. The company secured a total of $23 million in funding over four rounds from investors including Intel Capital, Blumberg Capital, and Evolution Equity Partners. In April 2018, Fortscale was acquired by RSA Security, a subsidiary of Dell Technologies. The acquisition aimed to integrate Fortscale's UEBA technology into RSA's NetWitness Platform, enhancing its capabilities to provide a more comprehensive threat detection and response solution.
