Formative operates as a real-time instructional and assessment platform within the EdTech market, catering to K-12 educators and school districts. The company was founded in 2013 by Craig Jones and Kevin McFarland, who began developing the platform while they were graduate students at UCLA. The initial concept, then named Smartest K12, won the Knapp Venture Competition in 2014, providing early momentum. The founders' backgrounds directly shaped the company's trajectory; Jones, a former 8th-grade science teacher for Teach for America, experienced firsthand the need for faster feedback loops in the classroom, while McFarland brought an analytical perspective with degrees in Physics and Economics. Their shared vision was solidified through participation in the Imagine K12 and 4.0 Schools incubator programs, which emphasized a research-based approach to solving educational challenges.

The business generates revenue through a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, offering subscriptions to its platform. While a version of the tool is available for free to individual teachers, the primary revenue stream comes from paid premium plans for individuals, schools, and districts, which provide enhanced features, full technical support, and administrative access. This strategy proved successful, leading to a significant $70 million Series A funding round in 2021 to fuel product enhancement and international expansion. In a major milestone, Formative was acquired by Newsela, an instructional content platform, in June 2023, combining Formative's assessment tools with Newsela's extensive content library.

The Formative platform is designed to accelerate learning by enabling teachers to monitor student comprehension live. Educators can create assessments from scratch, upload existing materials like PDFs, and use a variety of question types, including audio, graphing, and diagrams. A key feature is the ability for teachers to see student responses in real-time, allowing for immediate intervention and personalized feedback without waiting for a formal submission. The system also facilitates the tracking of student progress against learning standards and supports collaboration among educators on assessment data. This focus on providing teachers with actionable data aims to shift the assessment model from summative (end-of-year tests) to formative, where insights are gathered continuously to guide instruction.
