About Forbes Medi-Tech
Forbes Medi-Tech Inc. operated as a biopharmaceutical and nutraceutical company headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, specializing in products for cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. The company's core business revolved around the extraction of plant sterols, or phytosterols, from by-products of wood pulping. These compounds were then developed into cholesterol-lowering agents for use as dietary supplements and ingredients in functional foods.
The company's flagship product was Reducol™, a proprietary blend of plant sterols clinically demonstrated to reduce LDL cholesterol levels. Forbes Medi-Tech's business model focused on supplying this ingredient to manufacturers and retailers for inclusion in their own branded products. This strategy led to partnerships with major retailers and food companies, particularly in Europe and North America. For instance, Reducol was used in products sold by large retailers like Tesco and Walmart/ASDA in the U.K. and was the key ingredient in Pharmavite's Nature Made CholestOff supplement. The business generated revenue through the sale of Reducol™ and other phytosterol ingredients to these partners.
Over its history, Forbes Medi-Tech navigated several strategic shifts. The company initially pursued both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical development. In 2008, under the leadership of President and CEO Charles Butt, the company underwent a significant restructuring to concentrate exclusively on its revenue-generating nutraceutical business. This pivot involved ceasing all in-house pharmaceutical development, closing its San Diego research facility, and selling its pharmaceutical business unit to Transition Therapeutics. Despite achieving notable commercial milestones, including EU health claim approval for Reducol, the company faced financial difficulties. This led to its delisting from the NASDAQ in 2010. In August 2010, Forbes Medi-Tech sold substantially all of its assets to Pharmachem Laboratories, Inc. for US$4.0 million and changed its name to FMI Holdings Ltd. before undergoing a planned liquidation. The final distribution to shareholders occurred in early 2012, marking the end of the company's operations.
