About Focal Communications
Focal-JMLab, operating under the brand name Focal, is a French company specializing in the design and manufacturing of high-fidelity audio systems. The firm was established in 1979 in Saint-Étienne by Jacques Mahul, an engineer and high-fidelity enthusiast who previously worked as chief engineer at Audax. Mahul's journey began in a small workshop at his father's precision mechanics company, where he started creating his first speaker drivers and launched a loudspeaker range under the JMlab brand, named after his initials.
The company's business is segmented into five main categories: Home, Car, Professional, Headphones, and Integration. This diverse portfolio serves a wide range of clients, from audiophiles and home cinema enthusiasts to professional recording studios, and automotive partners like Peugeot. Focal's revenue is generated from the sale of its audio products, which are distributed in over 160 countries. The business model is centered on maintaining full control over the entire production process, from the design and manufacturing of speaker drivers to the final assembly of the product, with the majority of production happening in France. This vertical integration allows for meticulous quality control and is a cornerstone of the brand's premium positioning. In 2022, the parent company, Vervent Audio Group, reported a turnover of €156 million.
Focal's product lineup is extensive, featuring high-fidelity loudspeakers, in-ceiling and in-wall speakers, home cinema systems, outdoor speakers, car audio kits, professional studio monitors, and a range of headphones including wireless noise-canceling models. A significant milestone was the creation of the Grande Utopia loudspeaker in 1995, a product that gained international acclaim and solidified Focal's reputation in the high-end audio market. Over the years, the company has introduced numerous proprietary technologies such as the inverted dome tweeter, 'W' sandwich cones, and the use of Beryllium for tweeters, all aimed at delivering a clear and precise sound free of distortion.
In 1990, Gérard Chrétien joined the company, steering its marketing and helping it become a leader in the French loudspeaker market. A significant strategic move occurred in 2011 when Focal-JMlab merged with Naim Audio, a leading UK-based high-end electronics brand, forming the Vervent Audio Group. This merger created a synergistic partnership, with Focal focusing on acoustics and Naim on electronics. In 2019, Alpha Private Equity acquired a majority stake in Vervent Audio Group, which has since expanded its global presence with a network of 'Focal Powered by Naim' retail stores.
