About Fling

Fling, operating under the parent company Unii, was a social media application founded in London in 2012 by Marco Nardone. Initially conceived as Unii.com, a social network for UK students, the concept pivoted in January 2014 to a messaging service enabling users to send photos to strangers. Nardone, who attended the £37,000-a-year Charterhouse boarding school and briefly worked as a trader for Credit Suisse, was the son of the multimillionaire founder of a successful wine distribution business.

The Fling app launched between March and July 2014, allowing users to send a photo or video to 50 random, anonymous users globally, who could then reply via chat. The application saw rapid initial uptake, achieving 375,000 downloads within its first month. At its peak, the company claimed to have 4 million users. The business model was predicated on achieving massive user growth, but the company generated no revenue during its operation. Fling raised a total of $21 million in funding, with a significant £5 million portion coming from Nardone's father. The remaining investment was sourced from a syndicate of wealthy individuals.

The platform's core feature of connecting strangers led to its widespread use for exchanging explicit content. This resulted in Apple removing Fling from the App Store in June 2015 for being too similar to Chatroulette. The development team was tasked with a complete rewrite of the app, removing the random messaging feature to comply with App Store guidelines. The redesigned application, which resembled a Snapchat-style messenger, failed to regain the traction of its predecessor. Compounded by reports of mismanagement and irresponsible spending of investor funds on luxuries, the company's finances dwindled. The parent company, Unii, ultimately went bankrupt, and the Fling app was taken offline in August 2016, leaving behind debts of £880,997.
