FirstLight is a digital infrastructure provider that delivers fiber-optic-based services to a client base of enterprise and carrier customers across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The company's history began in 1999 when Tech Valley Communications (TVC) was founded in Albany, New York, to supply high-quality, fiber-based communications services. A significant growth phase commenced through a series of acquisitions, starting with GFC Communications in 2000 and a merger with Mid-Hudson Communications in 2002. In 2013, the company rebranded from Tech Valley to FirstLight Fiber. This was followed by a period of aggressive expansion fueled by private equity investment, including acquisitions of segTEL, TelJet, and G4 Communications, which broadened its footprint across New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

Ownership of FirstLight has transitioned through several private equity firms, which has been instrumental in its growth strategy. Initially backed by Riverside Partners in 2010, the company was later acquired by Oak Hill Capital Partners in 2016, a move designed to accelerate growth through further investment and acquisitions. Subsequently, Antin Infrastructure Partners acquired FirstLight from Oak Hill in 2018, continuing the trajectory of expansion. This strategy has been executed through numerous acquisitions, including Oxford Networks, Sovernet Communications, Finger Lakes Technologies Group (FLTG), and 186 Communications, significantly increasing its network mileage and on-net locations. Jason Campbell currently serves as Chief Executive Officer, leading the company's strategic direction.

The core of FirstLight's business is its extensive fiber optic network, which spans over 25,000 route miles and connects nearly 15,000 locations, with the capacity to service an additional 125,000. The company's business model is centered on providing high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity solutions. Revenue is generated through the sale of a comprehensive suite of services, including dedicated internet access, Ethernet, wavelength services, and dark fiber. Beyond connectivity, FirstLight operates 14 data centers compliant with certifications like HIPAA and SOC II, offering colocation, cloud computing, and various managed IT services. The service portfolio also extends to unified communications, managed security, and Cisco-based hardware solutions. Its clientele is diverse, encompassing national cellular and wireline carriers, as well as enterprises in sectors such as healthcare, finance, education, government, and high-tech manufacturing.
