First Merchants
Multi- bank holding company
About First Merchants
In 1893, during a national financial panic, a group of businesspeople in Muncie, Indiana, saw a community need for a reliable bank. Led by a former schoolteacher and grocer named Hardin Roads, they raised $100,000 in capital to incorporate The Merchants National Bank of Muncie. This initial investment was the only time the bank needed to raise capital from outside sources. The bank grew steadily, merging with two other local banks in 1933 and expanding with its first branch in 1951. A pivotal moment came in 1982 when the board formed a one-bank holding company, First Merchants Corporation, to provide flexibility for future growth in a rapidly changing financial industry. This strategic shift set the stage for a new playbook. In 1989, the corporation's stock was listed on the NASDAQ, improving its marketability and fueling its expansion. What followed was a deliberate strategy of growth through acquisition. Starting in 1988, First Merchants began acquiring smaller community banks across Indiana, steadily expanding its footprint. This playbook accelerated in the 2000s and 2010s, with the company acquiring banks in Ohio and Michigan, eventually surpassing $10 billion in assets in 2019. As of late 2025, with a pending acquisition of First Savings Financial Group, the combined entity is projected to hold approximately $21 billion in assets. From a single room in Muncie to a major regional bank, First Merchants built its journey not on venture capital, but on a century of community banking and strategic acquisition.
