Configuration, interactive selling and eservice software solutions
About Firepond
In the late 1990s, the world of enterprise software was rapidly evolving, and one company, Firepond, aimed to capitalize on this shift. Though incorporated in 1983 as an IT consulting firm, the company pivoted to software in 1997. It developed a suite of applications designed to let businesses merge their e-commerce, customer relationship management, and sales processes onto a single internet-based platform. This was the early era of what would become known as Configure, Price, Quote (CPQ) software, automating complex sales for companies with configurable products. The major turning point for Firepond came in February 2000. Under the leadership of President and CEO Klaus Besier, a former SAP executive known for driving massive growth, Firepond launched its Initial Public Offering. The IPO was a spectacle of the dot-com boom, with shares pricing at $22 and skyrocketing to $100 on the first day of trading. This event marked a significant, albeit brief, high point for the company, placing it in the spotlight as one of the most successful IPOs of that year. However, the success was short-lived. Following the IPO, Firepond faced challenges, including shareholder lawsuits and a business restructuring. By 2005, a new entity acquired the operating assets and employees of the original Firepond. The business was later acquired in 2009 by FPX, LLC, which continued to develop the CPQ software. Firepond's journey serves as a classic tale from the dot-com era: a rapid, high-flying public offering followed by significant operational and market challenges that ultimately led to its acquisition.
