End-to-end space transportation company, offering a portfolio of launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles MoreLess
Firefly Aerospace operates as an end-to-end space transportation company, offering a portfolio of launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles. The firm's business model is centered on providing affordable and reliable space access for both government and commercial clients, including NASA, the U.S. Space Force, Lockheed Martin, and L3Harris.
The company's journey began in 2014 as Firefly Space Systems, founded by Tom Markusic, P.J. King, and Michael Blum. Markusic, an engineer with a Ph.D. from Princeton and experience at SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic, envisioned a future of frequent space launches akin to fireflies in the night sky. The company faced early financial turmoil, leading to bankruptcy in 2017. It was resurrected as Firefly Aerospace after its assets were acquired by Noosphere Ventures, a fund led by Ukrainian entrepreneur Max Polyakov, who invested over $200 million. Following U.S. government national security concerns, Polyakov divested his majority stake in 2022 to private equity firm AE Industrial Partners.
Firefly generates revenue through launch services, spacecraft sales, and in-space services. Its primary launch vehicle, the Alpha rocket, targets the small-to-medium lift market, designed to carry payloads up to 1,030 kg to low Earth orbit for approximately $15 million per launch. This positions it in a market niche for payloads too large for small launchers but not justifying the cost of heavy-lift rockets. The company has secured significant multi-launch agreements with customers like Lockheed Martin and L3Harris. Its vertically integrated approach, utilizing advanced carbon composite structures and patented tap-off cycle engines, aims to scale efficiencies and lower costs.
Beyond launch services, Firefly has established a significant presence in lunar exploration with its Blue Ghost lunar lander. In March 2025, Firefly became the first commercial company to achieve a fully successful soft landing on the Moon as part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. The company holds multiple CLPS contracts for annual missions to deliver scientific instruments and rovers to the lunar surface, including its south pole. Firefly also offers the Elytra orbital vehicle (formerly Space Utility Vehicle), a space tug designed for on-orbit mobility, satellite servicing, and transferring hardware between Earth and lunar orbits.
