The company was founded in 2022 by Nat Zilkha, former partner at KKR and Chairman of Gibson Brands, and Nathan Hubbard, the former CEO of Ticketmaster and an executive at Twitter. The founders bonded over a shared passion for music while at Princeton University, with both having early career aspirations in music before moving into business and technology. Zilkha, a guitarist who played in a band called Red Rooster, later applied his financial acumen at KKR, where he led investments in the music sector and played a key role in Gibson's restructuring. Hubbard's experience at Ticketmaster and Twitter centered on monetizing fan passion and leveraging technology for commerce.

Firebird's business model is centered on partnering with artists and acquiring stakes in operational music companies, including management firms, record labels, and publishers. Rather than purchasing individual song rights, the firm invests in the businesses that support artists, providing them with capital and access to a sophisticated ecosystem of resources in marketing, data analytics, and digital platforms like gaming and AI. This strategy allows the creative processes of its partners to remain independent while benefiting from Firebird's scale and expertise. The company typically acquires majority stakes through a mix of cash and stock, aligning the interests of its new partners with Firebird's overall success. Firebird has raised over $400 million from investors including The Raine Group, KKR, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, and The Pritzker Organization.

Since its inception, Firebird has built a diverse portfolio. Its investments include acquiring significant minority or majority stakes in companies such as Red Light Management, Transgressive Records, Mick Management, Defected Records, and the Nashville publisher Tape Room Music. The company powers a roster of over 1,000 artists through these partnerships. A notable recent deal is a partnership with the artist Yungblud, creating a new entity, YB Inc., where earnings from music, touring, and merchandise are shared in a unified growth model backed by a multi-million dollar investment from Firebird.
