FilmLoop
A free software enabling people and businesses to broadcast, find, and share digital images
About FilmLoop
FilmLoop was a software company that developed a direct-to-desktop photo broadcasting network. The company's primary offering was a free software application that allowed users to create and share looping photo stories, known as "Loops." These loops could be displayed on a user's desktop or embedded on websites like MySpace, Live Journal, and Blogger. The service launched with FilmLoop 1.0 and was later upgraded to version 2.0, which introduced features for building collages with multiple photos and using transparency for layered effects.
The company's business model appeared to have a dual focus. While the basic photo-sharing software was free for general users, FilmLoop also positioned itself as a marketing tool for businesses. Major brands, including Toyota, eBay, and Purina, utilized the platform for their marketing efforts. The company's revenue was likely generated through these corporate partnerships and advertising, as users noted the presence of ads within the free application. FilmLoop successfully raised a total of $12.6 million over two funding rounds. The Series A round in February 2005 brought in $5.5 million from investors like Garage Technology Ventures and Globespan Capital Partners. A subsequent Series B round in May 2006, led by Fuse Capital, raised an additional $7 million. One of its notable backers was early Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki through his venture capital firm, Garage Technology Ventures.
On December 1, 2006, FilmLoop was acquired by Fabrik (Internet Software), marking the conclusion of its journey as an independent entity. The current FilmLoop.com website is operated by a different entity, a production company focused on developing and producing films and TV series with an emphasis on online content and short-form storytelling. This new iteration of FilmLoop collaborates with industry professionals and offers production services to other companies.
